Ancillary Care executive publishes article challenging the APTA’s campaign against physician-owned physical therapy

ACS co-founder Cary Edgar publishes article in Advance for Physical Therapy & Rehab Medicine explaining why the APTA’s campaign is misguided and counterproductive

Scottsdale, AZ – November 7, 2011 – Cary Edgar, co-founder and key principal of Ancillary Care Solutions (ACS), the nationwide leader in helping health systems and physician groups establish and manage outpatient physical therapy and hand therapy programs, was featured in the online edition of Advance, analyzing the American Physical Therapy Association’s long-standing campaign against physician-owned physical therapy services (or so-called “POPTS”).  His analysis addresses:

  • How the APTA has misled its membership, the public and others by misconstruing outdated and flawed studies to support its campaign against POPTS;
  • The results of the most current and reliable study of the differences between the costs of physical therapy in physician groups and private physical therapy practices;
  • How the APTA has senselessly constrained employment opportunities of its members and other physical therapists in furtherance of its campaign against POPTS;
  • How the APTA’s position of encouraging independent physical therapy practices conflicts with current economic, legislative and public policies;
  • How the APTA’s promotion of autonomous physical therapy practices has almost certainly resulted in a decrease in physical therapy payment rates;
  • How the APTA has misrepresented physician physical therapy referrals as posing a unique and unfair conflict of interest; and
  • What the APTA should do about POPTS if it is truly interested in promoting “evidence-based practice” in accordance with its vision for the future of physical therapy.

“Finally, an article that challenges the notion that POPTS clinicians are somehow less qualified and less ethical than their private practice counterparts and refutes the often erroneous and outdated data used by the APTA to substantiate those claims” says Deb Nadel, Director of Physical Therapy at Ventura Orthopedics in Ventura, California.
